Based on the traditional recipe for ‘Haymaker’s Punch,’ switchel was a staple for rural Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries to quench thirst and replenish electrolytes after a long, hot day in the fields.

In the 18th century, US congress even mixed up ‘dirty’ Switchel with Jamaican rum to lubricate the political discourse of the day.

My Favourite

Everyone in my family love these sparkling switchel, from great grandma 96 to grand-daughter 3. We don’t drink soft drink, so find these switchels delightfully refreshing. We all have our favourite flavour, mine personally is the tangy lemon ginger. We purchase by the carton and always have to have a box of each, lemon and berry to satisfy everyone’s taste.

Refreshing!

A refreshing drink without the excessive sweetness in many drinks that use processed sugar. I only discovered this recently, during the colder winter weather, but I can tell it will be the perfect drink on hot days once summer arrives. I have been enjoying this as a mixer with spiced rum - lovely combination.
